Ways Parents Can Help Reduce Stress and Anxiety During the School Day
“Masking” is when a child hides or changes parts of who they are to fit in or avoid negative attention. For neurodivergent children, this might mean copying how others talk, act, or show emotions—even when it feels uncomfortable or exhausting.
While masking can help a child blend in temporarily, it often takes a lot of energy and can lead to stress, anxiety, or emotional burnout later—often showing up as meltdowns, shutdowns, or fatigue at home.
Understanding and supporting your child’s needs during and after school can make a big difference. Here are some ways parents can help reduce the stress of masking and create a more supportive environment.
